Since 2019, the Minden-Lübbecke district has held two annual competitions, “Heimat Preis Minden-Lübbecke” and “Dörfer mit Ideen” (Villages with Ideas). These competitions recognize exemplary, concrete initiatives that are forward-looking and serve as models for the region.
The organizer is the Minden-Lübbecke district and the Office for Economic and District Development. The competition is supported by the North Rhine-Westphalia State Ministry for Home Affairs, Local Government, Building and Equal Opportunities (MHKBG).
In August 2022, Ulrich Zieske, Chairman of the Pedagogical Working Group of the German Wind Power Museum (Deutsches Windkraftmuseum e.V.), was fortunate enough to spontaneously seize the opportunity to register the association and its environmental education activities for the Minden-Lübbecke Homeland Prize and participate in the competition.

In September 2022, an independent jury awarded the German Wind Power Museum first prize in the Minden-Lübbecke Homeland Prize for its environmental education work. The prize is endowed with €5,000.

The prize was presented by Michael Grosskurth, Deputy District Administrator.

This year, Zukunft durch Innovation.NRW (ZDI), Europe’s largest STEM network, launched a competition for the third time, inviting young filmmakers from North Rhine-Westphalia to submit their media products related to science.
Association member Sarah Spreen from Arrenkamp won first prize in the “Best Design” category.

Background:
Several years ago, Sarah shot a video about the Lagerwey LW10.6/20 and uploaded it to YouTube. A QR code was attached to the Lagerwey’s gondola, which leads to the video via smartphone. The director of a film crew that was on the museum grounds in June 2022 as part of the “REACT-EU” funding program noticed Sarah’s video and encouraged her to participate in the Science Video Competition.

The competition:
The awards were given to short films and videos that addressed the STEM topics of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology and communicated them to the public in a creative and humorous, relaxed way.

• Best Explanation
• Funniest Video
were presented to the young winners by the competition’s patron, Ina Brandes, Minister of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Since Sarah is currently in Canada for a year of high school, she was unable to accept the award in person. Her mother accepted on her behalf.

At the beginning of May this year, the last remaining component of the Voith WEC 520 was handed over to the German Wind Power Museum. The WEC 520 was a German research turbine with state funding from the early 1980s, which was located on a test field in Schnittlingen, Swabia.

Association member Jan Oelker presented the museum with a text on this topic, which was published by the Westfalen Blatt newspaper.

The German Wind Power Museum (Deutsches Windkraftmuseum e.V.) hosted a group of students from the EGEA (European Geography Association) on March 31, 2022.

EGEA is a network of geography students and those interested in geography who have been promoting and expanding cultural and scientific exchange within Europe for 30 years. EGEA currently has just over 90 locations in almost 30 European countries.

The students visited the German Wind Power Museum as part of the Western Regional Congress 2022, which took place from March 28 to April 2, 2022, on the grounds of the DJH Damme. Around 130 young participants interested in geography explored socially relevant and future-oriented topics related to renewable energies.

After a guided tour of the museum grounds with explanations of the open-air exhibits, Ulrich Zieske (Chair of the Educational Advisory Board) conducted experiments in the clubhouse on the fundamentals of wind orientation, power control, and the effects of the Bernoulli effect on historic windmills and modern wind turbines, as well as on the topic of infrasound.

Dipl.-Ing. Heiner Gerbracht (energy engineering Gerbracht, Osnabrück) was invited to give the second presentation. He develops international renewable energy projects and covered the entire field of wind energy, photovoltaics, energy storage, and politics in his presentation.

Finally, Jonas Töpken, Citizens’ Dialogue on the Power Grid, provided information on the energy transition and power grid expansion, particularly on the challenges involved in the planning and approval process for new power lines.

All participants were satisfied with this very informative and diverse museum visit.

The German Wind Power Museum and the Mill Association of the Minden-Lübbecke district have
 entered into a cooperation agreement. Effective immediately, the two associations will
 support each other in the Minden-Lübbecke region.

The associations will promote each other. Furthermore, the Mill Association will include
 the German Wind Power Museum as a new location on the renowned Westphalian Mill Road.

The cooperation has been agreed for an indefinite period and is intended to provide additional
 impetus to both associations and to the history of wind power utilization in general.
